6:33 pm
on sportsday this evening: we made mistakes and we accept the penalty. can saracens now save their season? eddiejones tells us that saracens' punishment could also be bad news for england. there might be some saracens players that feel like they have to play for their club instead of their country, to make sure they don't go down. this could be the week that wales make it back to the euros, and they hope they can be motivated by their french adventure in 2016. also coming up in the programme... the drivers at war. ferrari call in vettel and le clerc for clear the air talks. and we see how a disability football club in kent is changing lives.
6:34 pm
hello and welcome to sportsday. saracens came out fighting earlier this month and vowed to appeal against their 35 point deduction and £5 million fine for breaking the rugby premiership's salary cap. they called the sanctions heavy—handed. today, their chairman nigel wray admitted, we have made mistakes and so, with humility, we must accept these penalties. the english and european champions can forget title defences, it's now a battle to stay in the top division for the rest of the season. and what impact could it have on england, with so many sarries players in the squad. earlier i wasjoined by the england head coach, eddiejones, and asked him about the punihsment. these things happen. i don't think anybody ever has the intent of them happening and theyjust seem to grow. i've seen it in all sorts of sports and i think they will take their medicine
6:35 pm
and get on with it. what impact could that have on your england team? it could have a significant impact, and it's something that we need to weigh and look at very carefully. obviously, there may be some dislocation between saracens' players and the rest of the clubs, that's a reality, though we might have to work to mend those relationships a bit harder. and there might be some saracens players that feel like they've got to play for their club, instead of their country. you obviously got your captain from saracens, you talk about the possible strain on those relationships can't then they bubble up during the world cup because obviously all those players went straight back to the club. not at the world cup. i don't think anybody had a great knowledge and if they did
6:36 pm
they kept it to themselves. eddiejones with his concerns. more on this from ciaran bracken. good evening. a couple of weeks ago, you cold the punishment unfair and disproportionate. saracens are not contesting it. the chairman says they will pull together a meet the challenges that lie ahead. do you think that is sensible? i think it is sensible and very wise. at the time, they might feel hard done by because the accepted they didn't maliciously go out there to cheat the salary cap, but it would have been very costly, very time—consuming, but more importantly would have dragged saracens through the mud for a further period of time throughout the season. and so probably very unrealistic gain from it. so they have taken the medicine.
6:37 pm
if anyone can mend and get together and do what they can, it will be saracens. eddie jones mentioned there he was thinking about perhaps a full saracens players when we hit the six nations might put club before country. that becomes very difficult politically, with the relationship between club and country. do you think you may be possible for them to do that? for more, that is such a big thing, isn't it. traditionally, country comes first. however, the players will feel a sense of loyalty to theirclubs, will feel a sense of loyalty to their clubs, having won so much with their clubs, having won so much with the comrades. and to then sort of potentially leave their comrades in the lurch and leave the young guys to it that play so few games, the question is, will some of them decide this year they need to concentrate on their club? nobody wants to see that. from eddie jordan's' point of view, the friction going into the england
6:38 pm
camp, we have seen that with liverpool and manchester city, it can be blown out of proportion. it will not be easy. this will continue for some time. i very much hope saracens can get the points they need the season. very much hope the england players will play for england players will play for england and saracens will be ok and we can forget about it in to come. ciaran bracken, speaking to me earlier. kyran bracken speaking to me earlier, and a little later in the programme we'll hear much more from eddie jones about his world cup regrets and future with england. a couple of other rugby union lines for you. scotland will welcome the all blacks to murrayfield next year for their autumn series. the scots already had a match against japan, and they will also play argentina. that will open their campaign on the first weekend of november. the australian player israel folau has been criticised for drawing a link between the country's bushfires and same—sex marriage and abortion laws. speaking in a church in sydney, folau said the fires were a "little taste of god's judgment". he was sacked by rugby australia

6:40 pm
for the winner—takes—all match against the hungarians. he feels that they can draw on the experience of 2016 and also the pain of missing out on russia last year. we can use both of them to our advantage. 0bviously, we can use both of them to our advantage. obviously, we have got the euphoria of qualifying for the first euros and doing so well at the competition that we really want to do that again. and also we have got the negatives of we know how it feels to miss out on qualifying for a tournament, like we did in the world cup. so, yeah, we will use both of them to our advantage. we are in good form. we have gathered good momentum. but that doesn't count for anything if you don't finish the job. we know we are up don't finish the job. we know we are up againsta don't finish the job. we know we are up against a team that worked hard, are organised and will make it difficult. they need to win as well. we need to match their desire, their

balance issues. we have suspicion about their engine that people keep throwing at them. so it's been very ha rd throwing at them. so it's been very hard for them tojust throwing at them. so it's been very hard for them to just concentrate on the on track action and be the best they can be. since the summer break, ferrari have been incredible, getting poll after poll. lewis hamilton hasn't been on pole since the summer break. think back, mercedes have their own problems with nico rosberg and lewis hamilton duelling it out and ignoring team orders. so i think the all knowing exactly what it is like. at red bull, webber and vettel had their own battles as well. questions will be asked. is he strong enough to lead ferrari to a world title next season? still to come on sportsday... is it out with the old and in with the new, in men's tennis? and it's a life—line —
